Apparently Hamilton finished 3rd….
So, Formula 1s race stewards have apparently decided they didn’t want Lewis Hamilton to have won the race, and awarded him a 25 second penalty for getting run off the track while racing with Kimi Raikkonen for the lead. Even though he clearly would have only gained a few seconds at the most and let up to let Kimi past before continuing to race, hoping to nullify any advantage he may have gained. The official quote from Formual1.com is:
Hamilton was penalised after stewards decided he had gained an advantage by cutting the final chicane in his late-race battle with Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen. Raikkonen crashed out shortly after the incident, having the led the bulk of the race up to that point.full story.
In response to another bloggers commentary on the subject (found here) I stated:
Definitely ridiculous. I’m a fan of F1 even though I’m relatively new to the sport, but certain things the FIA do really cause you to scratch your head. One thing I heard during the American Broadcast of the race was that Kimi had been fined twice for 5,000 Euros for speeding on pit lane. In American racing if you speed on pit lane you get to come back through and try to get it right the next time. I would feel that in F1 where it is so hard to pass, especially between Hamilton and the Ferraris 2 or 3 seconds gained by speeding in the pits to win the race is well worth 5,000 Euros.
note: For Americans who may not know, a Euro is worth approximately 2 dollars, so that’s 10,000 USD.
